- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the commercial history of the Rhine River, particularly in regards to its developments throughout the 18th and early-19th centuries. Focus is given to the period between 1795 and 1813 where the governing laws of the Rhine were influenced by French trade domination. Various elements of the river's commercial administration are analyzed, especially its legal and geopolitical changes which mirrored shifts in French and German imperial regimes. Larger trends and implications on the history of state-governed economic policy are also addressed.
