- Abstract
I propose here to restore the importance of the relationship as a basic unit for social networks and to explore what makes its "substance", considered from the angle of the "driving force" of the relationship. In a longitudinal panel study interviewing young people every 3 years since 12 years, their personal networks have been constructed; data have been collected about all the persons they know in different life contexts and about the qualities of their ties. From the answers given to the question "what makes you close?" processed here statistically, I try to make a first analysis of this "driving force" of the ties. The distribution of these diverse "driving forces" is analyzed regarding the characteristics of alteri and relationships. I also try to draw some trends of evolutions in time.
