Remissioning Nonprofits: Two Case Studies of Membership Associations.
- Authors

- Abstract
The article presents case studies related to remissioning of two mutual benefit associations. United Ways have created local, state, and national membership associations for the better part of the twentieth century. In an expansive western state, the United Ways' association had a lone executive and a budget of $221,000 in 1994. The objective of the association was to carry out United Ways' public policy advocacy at the state capitol. On the other hand, business leaders believed that United Ways required some kind of statewide campaign uniformity in order to gain corporate efficiencies. Business leaders expected United Ways to act as if they were a unified system, with common campaign practices. So the association created the "Big 25" Initiative. The Big 25 Initiative was borne from a concern to deal with demands placed on the association's members by its major stakeholders, the state's largest corporations, which controlled access to thousands of employee donors as well as their own corporate contributions. In a survey the results of the "Big 24" study underscored the necessity of statewide fundraising cooperation among United Ways.
