- Abstract
The article focuses on the role of technical representations in the building of one of the most significant civil engineering projects of the mid-nineteenth century which was designed by engineer Joseph Bazalgette. It draws attention on the contract which is composed of engineering drawings and an accompanying specification which was the key document that mediated the relationship between the engineer and the contractor. The comprehensive technical representations such as sketches, orthographic plans and schematics were regarded as cognitive tools of the engineers.
