- Abstract
An essay is presented on the roles of gender, modernization, and nationalism in the history of Turkish fashion. Particular focus is given to the career of Turkish fashion model, artist, and actor Lale Belkis. Details on the relationship between national identity and the female body are presented. Other topics include girls' education in Turkey, diplomatic fashion shows, and queer subjectivity in Belkis' paintings.
