- Authors
Mitton, Matthew
- Abstract
This article discusses the life and work of the American Decadent poet Joseph Trumbull Stickney. It is suggested that Stickney, as an American who expatriated to France and then returned to the U.S., has a unique position in the canon as a fin-de-siècle author. Stickney's education, childhood, career as an academic, and effeminacy are described. Stickney's friendships with editor Robert Morss Lovett and poet George Cabot Lodge are explored. Other topics include the poems "Mnemosyne" and "In a City Garden" and Stickney's poetic style.
