- Abstract
The soil is critically important for the survival of land-based life, but at the same time soil has a considerable capacity to retain and concentrate chemicals. Originally, more than 800 storage depots with pesticides stored in them have been identified in Lithuania. This soviet time relic has been detected throughout the territory of Lithuania, in larger or smaller cities, in the sites of collective farms that used to be situated near lakes or rivers, and therefore they require great attention and environmental research, as they are potential sources of pollution, and may pose risk to the environment and human health. The development of methodology of preliminary risk assessment of soil and groundwater contamination of former pesticide depots will allow developing a priority list of depots which are potentially most hazard for the environment and need to be properly managed. The paper presents the results of pesticides depots assessment according to the developed methodology, and on the basis of received information provides suggestions for further steps.
