- Abstract
The letter titled "Ultrasound scans in hypospadias: a cost-efficient request?" questions the necessity of urinary tract ultrasound scans in patients with hypospadias. Hypospadias is a common congenital anomaly in males, and ultrasound scans are often requested to screen for other urinary tract anomalies before surgical referral. However, only 2% of patients with hypospadias have other urinary tract abnormalities, and these anomalies are unlikely to cause clinical problems. The authors argue that performing these scans is wasteful and cost inefficient, and suggest that screening ultrasounds should only be done when symptoms are present.
