The article discusses the career of American etymologist and lexicographer Allen Walker Read, focusing particularly on his unpublished manuscripts "The Rise of Dictionary Authority in English" and "A History of English Dictionaries," based on his 1930s dissertation written for work toward a Bachelor of Letters degree at St Edmund Hall, Oxford University, as a Rhodes Scholar under the supervision of C. T. Onions. An overview of read's education and professional career are provided. .
