- Title
Duncan’s Thanes and Malcolm’s Earls: Name Dropping in Macbeth.
- Authors
Baker, Oliver R.
- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented which discusses how William Shakespeare used the historical names of Scottish earls in his play "Macbeth." The author notes that Shakespeare used the book "Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland," by Raphael Holinshed as source material for the play and describes how Shakespeare named characters in the play for thanes who became earls such as Cathness and Menteth. He suggests Shakespeare left some of the thanes unnamed in the play for political reasons.
