- Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the influence of COVID-19 visual messages on the health behaviour of social media users in Nigeria. To pursue this objective, we tested three hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The survey research design was used to achieve the objective of the study while a combination of descriptive and inferential statistics was used to analyze the results. The sample size was 470 social media users in Nigeria. Our result showed that perceived susceptibility and perceived seriousness significantly predict engagement with social media visuals on COVID-19. We also found that engagement with social media visuals is significantly associated with knowledge of COVID-19 while knowledge of COVID-19 was found to be associated with all the six health behaviour. Our results have extended previous studies on the use of social media for health communication by showing how visuals can be effective in health campaigns. We conclude that social media visual messages are useful for health promotion, especially during public health emergency. The researcher recommends, among others, that training sessions should be organized on a regular basis for health experts to guide them on the utilization of posters for health promotion during outbreaks of diseases.
