- Abstract
In my paper I study the sound value of the letters u and v (w) in Halotti beszéd [Funeral Sermon], as well as the sound value of the digraphs made up of these two letters. The phonemic designation of Halotti beszéd is exceptionally consistent, implying a strong consciousness of the native language; therefore when reading the text, we can feel confident in relying on the pronunciation suggested by the spelling, and look at orthography as a strong argument when deciding about the phonological uncertainties. The not entirely consistent rule of use for the letters examined was the following: the sign of v was the letter v, the sign of short close labials (u, ü) was the letter u, and the sign of the long open labials (ú, ű) were the letters vv, uv. Additional digraphs created with v (ov, ev, iv), or potentially even eu, were also used as signs of diphthongs.
