The Literary Dictionary of Sabatier de Castres (1770) is considered the first work to have made use of the syntagm « dictionary of literature ». The innovative aspect of this work is, however, rather limited because of its didactic intent, a trait reminiscent of another of Sabatier's dictionaries: the Dictionary of Passions, Virtues and Vices (1769). Nevertheless, it remains an interesting example of the encyclopaedic movement wherein it was ultimately classified.
