- Abstract
Aim: Is to examine the implications of problematic use and addiction to social networks on adolescent mental health. Methodology: A systematic review of the literature published in the last five years (2018-2023) on social network addiction in adolescents was conducted. This review identified a total of 778 articles, of which only 37 met the established selection criteria and were included in the research. Results: The results revealed that the most widely used and widely applied measurement instrument in this field was the Addiction to Social Networks (ARS) questionnaire, especially in Latin America. Problematic use of social networks by adolescents was found to have diverse implications at the physical, psychological and social levels. Discussion: In general, the authors agree that excessive use of social networks can have negative impacts on the physical and mental health of individuals. However, there are differences as to whether this behavior should be considered an addiction or simply "overuse." Conclusions: Studies agree that social networks are designed to capture and retain users' attention, which can generate problems in physical, psychological and social health, especially in adolescents. These results highlight the importance of addressing this phenomenon and developing effective prevention and treatment strategies to protect the mental health of adolescents.
