- Abstract
This article presents an exploration into the history of the Lakeport Plantation Home in Chicot County, Arkansas. Introductory comments are given noting the significance of the site as the only remaining pre-Civil War plantation building on the Mississippi River in Arkansas. Details are provided discussing the life and family history of the plantation's founder from the 1850s Joel Johnson. Particular focus is given to the practice of slavery used on the plantation. Accounts are also given describing the history of the building after the Civil War and the 21st century archaeological work in the area seeking to uncover more information about the practices of 19th century slavery.
