The UV absorption spectra of F molecular ions in LaF, SrF, CaF, and BaF crystals doped with rare-earth elements are studied. Comparison of radiation-colored and additively colored crystals reveals the absorption bands of F hole centers in the region near 6 eV. Nonempirical calculations of optical transitions agree well with experimental results.
