- Abstract
It is necessary that university students who enter a new, challenging, unknown and robust environment should also have the necessary academic language ability and vocabulary to be successful in their studies (Nagy & Townsend, 2012). However, this is easier said than done, because who is supposed to take responsibility for this and how should vocabulary and vocabulary development be integrated into teaching-learning to aid study success? In fact, it is rarely the case that lecturers successfully focus on vocabulary development (including subject terminology) in their classes. In order to shed more light on these matters, the model for communicative competence and scaffolding theory is presented in this article as a theoretical basis. With this as the starting point, it is shown how a generic academic word lists, in this case the ICELDA-SADiLaR word list, can be used as a support tool, not only as a resource whilst producing an academic text, but also for use in the larger teaching-learning offering.
