- Abstract
The article discusses the problems and contradictions arising from the legal recognition of the "Rondas campesinas" or peasant patrols in Cajamarca, Peru, which were formed at the end of the 1970s by farmers in order to protect themselves from thieves. The alternative or vigilante form of administration of justice by the Rondas is analyzed at the organizational, ritual and normative levels. According to the article, there are ideological and practical difficulties regarding the patrols' legal recognition and use of physical punishment, but the author asserts that there are strategies to achieve an effective legal pluralism in Peru.
