- Abstract
It is known that many newspapers were published in Van in the last period of the Ottoman Empire. In this sense, the first local newspaper known in the city of Van is 'Ardzvi Vasburagan' in Armenian, which started its publication life in 1858. The first Turkish newspaper published in Van was the "Van" newspaper, which started its publication life in 1893. Some Ottoman citizens, who wanted to take advantage of the freedom of press brought by the Second Constitutional Monarchy, made attempts to publish the newspapers "İttihat" and "Mebde-i Feyz", which would broadcast in Turkish, Kurdish and Armenian. From 1858 to 1915, 27 Armenian newspapers and magazines were published by Armenians in Van. Ashhadank, Van-Dosb, Luys are some of these newspapers. One of the important newspapers of the period was "Çaldıran". Çaldıran newspaper, which was trying to continue its publication life with great difficulties in the years that coincided with the start of the First World War, ended its publication life towards the end of 1915 with the occupation of Van by the Russians. As of this date, the press activities in Van were completely finished and the first local newspaper after the establishment of the Republic was Yeni Yurd Van newspaper, which started its publication life only in 1937. Another newspaper that started its publication life in 1939 is Van. Although both newspapers did not go beyond the official state discourse due to the conditions of the period, they played an important role in the formation of the local press culture in the city of Van. With this work; Today, it is aimed to reveal the foundations of the Van local press, which has a very colorful appearance, with many newspapers and magazines broadcasting daily, weekly and monthly. The subject of the study is the last period of the Ottoman state, where the first press activities started in the city of Van, and the first newspapers and magazines published after the proclamation of the Republic. The publishing policies, ownership structures of the newspapers and magazines published in the mentioned period and how they conveyed the events in the period they were published were examined.
