- Title
DIMORPHISM IN COSMARIUM BOTRYTIS VAR. DEPRESSUM.

- Abstract
Desmids are characterized by cells of 2 halves, each half a mirror image of the other. The basic shape of a desmid is determined by the number of its planes of symmetry. Pleoradiation has been reported in Cosmarium turpinii, C. botrytis, and Staurastrum polymorphum. Among the Cosmarium species, C. turpinii was affected by an increase in ploidy level, whereas C. botrytis was formed only during the first division of a juvenile cell. Observations of pleoradiation make it obvious that the number of radii is not a stable taxonomic character and that it cannot be used to distinguish desmid genera.
