- Abstract
This article, titled "Alien Language: Reflections on the Rhetoric of Invasion Biology," discusses the importance of language and naming conventions when communicating about invasive species. The authors highlight the use of metaphors in invasion biology, such as military and nativist language, and how they can shape public perception and reinforce stereotypes. They also address the issue of species names that commemorate individuals with troubled historical legacies or perpetuate xenophobia. The article emphasizes the need for more inclusive language and naming guidelines in invasive species communication and suggests that Sea Grant can play a role in facilitating this effort.
