The article presents information on hexactinellid or reef-building sponges which became extinct 100 million years ago. It is noted that hexactinellid left evidence of their presence in fossilized remains across Europe after they were driven out by the single-celled algae, diatoms. The findings of a study on glass sponge reefs by paleontologists like Manfred Krautter are also discussed.
