- Abstract
With the increase in the coverage and awareness of environmental issues, sustainability in sport is becoming an essential topic of study. Golf and its ecological impacts have had an unstable history. Still, one avenue golf course operators have committed to is protecting the environment by participating in an environmental program. This study focuses on one of the leading certified programs, the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP). Using a qualitative approach to Value Belief Norm (VBN) theory's causal chain model, this study aims to address the level of importance golf course operators in east Tennessee place on ACSP certification. Semi-structured interviews from 13 participants conducted over 10 months provided three main themes. Results from the interviews provided the following data: golf course operators feel similar practices are being used, regardless of certification status; certification is entirely up to them, with no outside pressures influencing their actions; and the right things are being done when it comes to the environment, based on their continuing education. Ascription of responsibility (AR) data were found only in certified course operators' interviews, proving the only significant difference between ACSP certified courses and non-certified courses.
