The article offers information on research on comparison between emergency department (ED) presenting complaint and ED discharge diagnosis in the U.S. It mention that policy makers of hospitals are now considering reduction in the use of emergency department as a cost control method in context to increasing medical care cost. It mentions that the main aim of the study was to determine whether ED presenting complaint and ED discharge diagnosis can be used to accurately identify the nonemergency Ed visits. It also mentions that a substantial proportion among the Ed visits requires the immediate emergency care or hospital admission while the results of the study shows that it is not possible to identify nonemergency ED visits from discharge diagnosis.
