- Abstract
Recently there was considerable media attention to surgery and pathology at the Essex County hospitals in Ontario. This culminated in the appointment of an investigative team by Ontario's minister of health and long-term care. The authority and importance ascribed to the investigation are underscored by the fact that a temporary amendment was made to the Ontario Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) specifically for the sake of the investigation. The investigative team issued its report in July 2010, and this included retrospective reviews focusing on a single pathologist and a single surgeon. Nineteen recommendations were made, and those with the greatest impact involved the creation of a standardized provincial quality assurance program in collaboration with various stakeholders, including the minister of health. This essay reviews media reports as well as the Investigative Report relating to events at the Essex County hospitals. This may provide insight into the context associated with the proposals for a provincial quality assurance program in pathology. It is also important to look at the events at Essex County in and of themselves because of the public criticism of a member of the pathology community.
