- Title
Cornice dynamics and meteorological control at Gruvefjellet, Central Svalbard.
- Authors
Vogel, S.; Eckerstorfer, M.; Christiansen, H. H.
- Abstract
The article presents the first comprehensive investigation of cornice formation and failure carried out in a High Arctic landscape aimed at providing geomorphological understanding of its dynamics and improving the predictability of cornice fall avalanches. It notes the development of tension cracks between cornice mass and plateau induced by air temperature fluctuations. The study indicates that any type of meteorological warning in not an adequate measure to ensure safety of housing at risk.
