- Abstract
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on health systems around the world. Healthcare workers, especially nurses, faced important organizational challenges, putting their own safety at risk. Therefore, it is essential to understand the experience of healthcare personnel who are at the forefront to manage the health emergency. Aim: The objective of the study was to explore the experience of Nurses employed in caring for patients with COVID-19 in acute care hospital setting. Materials And Methods: A descriptive phenomenological qualitative study was conducted. Participants in this study included emergency nurses and critical nurses of second level Italian DEA, employed in caring for patients with COVID-19, in the period april-may 2020. Unstructured, audio- recorder interviews were conducted using face to face approach. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed. Results: 12 interviews were conducted in which 6 themes and 17 sub-categories emerged. The thematic areas highlighted were: emotional impact, relationship with patients, workplace, personal protective equipment, family environment, adaptation. Discussions: The findings highlighted the experience lived by the nurses, suggesting that the pandemic had a strong impact on both the professional and personal spheres of Nurses, in line with international literature. Conclusions: The issues that emerged provide important information on the emotional and work impact that the pandemic had on Nurses. Understanding the frontline workers' experience is essential to implement effective strategies to reduce stress and burnout and to enhance the quality of care.
