- Abstract
Introduction: Competence is an integrated set of knowledge and skills aimed at gaining results in line with the goals of the organization. The competency assessment is based both on behaviour in significant professional environments and on knowledge and skills underlying these behaviours. Furthermore, competence represents an essential tool for acquiring and developing individual awareness. The competency assessment requires a second subject, called the examiner. Nurse competence plays an essential role in ensuring the quality of interventions and health outcomes. Materials and Methods: Within the emergency situation of Friuli-Venezia Giulia (FVG), the "Definition of the individual skills of the personnel involved in the emergency medical services system and the construction of a professional portfolio" project has been launched. Starting from a Consensus Conference, we developed several sources of investigations. In the first phase of the analysis process, we identified the skills profile required. Next, through focus groups, we analysed and discussed each of these skills. Results: Narrative reports of nursing experiences revealed crucial aspects of the nurse role that cannot be grasped neither by formal descriptions of professional techniques, nor by approaches to the job description based on the tasks analysis. Twelve domains, which define nursing areas and skills, have been identified. Discussion: In such a complicated scenario, the education guidance must be calibrated, focusing on In-depth curriculum and skill-based programs. Given the innovation of skills mapping, it is crucial to know and to describe skills learned by professionals. Conclusion: The path of deepening as realized in the FVG framework, emphasizes the importance of skills enhancement of professionals involved in the emergency system.
