- Abstract
Backgound: death and bereavement are often poorly dealt with in emergency departments. The aim of this study is to suggest an approach to the emotional experiences of family members who have lost a loved one in A&E. Method: a short review of literature on the bereavement care after a sudden and unexpected death and a brief analysis of the grief process are used to supply a firm basis for the proposed choices. Results: many studies have identified a number of helpful actions: providing privacy to bereaved family members, offering emotional support, allowing them to be with the deceased, and to verbalize their anxieties, providing the opportunity for them to view the deceased body. Conclusion: this article proposes a guideline for optimal care of bereaved relatives. Family members appreciate a more "human" approach from hospital staff.
