- Abstract
This document is a reply to a comment made by Drs Plantone and Primiano on a study regarding serum neurofilament light chain (NfL) and small fiber neuropathy (SFN). The authors of the reply agree that having a marker specific for peripheral nerve damage would be beneficial, but they do not believe that NfL is solely a marker for central nervous system damage. They discuss the correlation between NfL levels and sensory nerve action potential amplitude in SFN, as well as the potential use of peripherin as another marker for peripheral nerve damage. The authors suggest further studies to confirm these findings and explore the dynamics of NfL and peripherin blood levels during and after nerve damage. They also acknowledge that factors such as age, chronic kidney disease, and body mass index can impact NfL measurements. The authors conclude by stating their contributions to the study.
