Schneider, Jr., Richard
- Abstract
The article presents a discussion of whether art in any of its forms, and particularly classical or wordless music, can ever be qualified as "gay." Such quality would entail that a gay sensibility, as a personality trait, be recognized as manifest in an artist's work. The author cites composer Ned Rorem, who rejects the notion of "gay sensibility," but turns to it often in his writing about music noting that half of what he called the 12 greatest American composers were gay. The author goes on to consider the concept within the context of the visual arts and considers abstract art as the equivalent, noting that very few gay artists have chosen the path of pure abstraction. By contrast, openly gay artists such as Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns chose representational art.
