- Abstract
The paper focuses on certain verbal interactions of Euripides' Hippolytus, in which the courtesy speech subact is employed. Theater's dialogic property, the language of Euripides' characters, and the asymmetrical social relationships (masters/slaves, gods/human beings, men/women, fathers/sons) are some of the elements that make this analysis possible. From Haverkate's pragma-linguistic approach, a classification of the courtesy speech subacts is offered, allowing an appreciation of the complex text-context interactions both in ancient Greek and in the dramatic genre, in order to achieve a better understanding of these kinds of scenes.
