- Abstract
Due to the fast increase in the population of the World, also the need for the energy increases rapidly. Various studies have been made to meet this extra energy demand. Most of these studies were focused on alternative energy sources. Solar water heaters are one of the most popular ones of these sources due to relatively less installation cost, and because it can work for long times without any need for maintenance. In the study, performance of solar water heaters with heat pipe, which use R-22 coolant, and works efficiently in heating applications of the solar energy. Heat pipe principle, which can provide high efficiency in solar heater systems, is used in the study, and effects of R-22 refrigerant to the system performance were explored. For this purpose, two identical solar water heaters, one of which is with heat pipe and the other is with natural circulation, were designed and produced. In the end of the experiments and theoretical calculations, the system performances of the two systems were found to be the same. However, systems with heat pipe are considered to be more preferable by their advantages of its easy manufacture, low cost, and being free from freezing in winter, and reverse flow at night.
