- Abstract
The table depicting Saint Anthony standing with a lily and book, is signed by Andrea da Murano and dated 1486 and it's is believed to have always been preserved in the Antonian sanctuary of Camposampiero. There is relatively little literature on the painting and the tradition that identifies the last bed in which Saint Anthony lay down in the wooden support is reported by writers from the mid-nineteenth century onwards, mainly from the local area. The precise reasons that presided over the choice to have the table-bed painted, are unknown, and it is hereby proposed to recognize in painting the modality of transformation and enhancement of the table-relic. The most recent studies on the painter Andrea da Murano have highlighted his work also in the field of wood carving, already documented in Venice, in the choir of the church of San Zaccaria. The reasons why Andrea settled in Castelfranco Veneto around the middle of the ninth decade are unknown, but from that moment he was active in the territory between Treviso and Padua, supplying the parish with altarpieces, with sometimes very high results, as in the case of the Trebaseleghe al-tarpiece, in which the language learned alongside Antonio and Bartolomeo Vivarini - very active authors in the Franciscan Observance church - is declined, also taking inspiration from Cima da Conegliano.
