- Abstract
Whilst strong politics of segregation were being established in the Empire's cities and their planning was conceived according to a racial zoning system - I zonizzazione i - racist theories and expressions of Italy's domination gave birth to a renewal of architectural and urban theories in the late 1930s - as demonstrated both by the National Congresses of Architecture (1936) and Urbanism (1937). Considering I urbanistica coloniale i alongside the racial laws and the emergence of an imperial administration, and taking the colonial experience into consideration, should thus allow an alternative reading of this ill-famed chapter of Italian history. After Mussolini proclaimed the Empire, the narratives of civilisational and racial superiority became prominent in architectural theories, and urbanism, in this context, became a propaganda tool for the regime to use to establish domination.
