- Abstract
The article examines the use of English literature in developing communication skills. It notes the failure of students to succeed in English language communicative skills. According to some educationalists, learners fail to improve such skills because of a heavy dose of classical literature offered for study in classes. Specific uses of literature in language class are also discussed, one of which is that the skill of guessing the meaning of an unfamiliar vocabulary item from the context can be easily developed with the aid of literature.
