- Title
Farewell to the New York Times Sports Department (Or is it Good Riddance?).
- Authors
LIPSYTE, ROBERT
- Abstract
The article discusses the recent decision by The New York Times to abolish its sports department. The author, who worked as a copyboy in the sports department many years ago, reflects on the purpose and value of sports coverage in journalism. While acknowledging that much of sports news can be trivial and speculative, the author also highlights the unique role that the sports department played within the newspaper. The Times' new plan involves outsourcing sports coverage to The Athletic and reassigning former sports department staff to other departments within the newspaper. The author questions whether this new approach will maintain the same level of investigative and in-depth sports reporting. The article suggests that future sports coverage should focus on important issues such as the professionalization of college sports, the role of gambling, and the experiences of transgender athletes.
