- Title
Textured Breast Implants a social media crisis?
- Authors
Asbery, Juliet
- Abstract
Textured breast implants and tissue expanders have been used for surgical breast reconstruction and augmentation since the early 1990s. In 2017 a link was made between textured implants and an increased rate of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). A subsequent product recall occurred. The relative risk of patients developing this lymphoma is explored along with the possible association with bacterial contamination during surgery. The new surgical guidelines aimed at reducing bacterial contamination are outlined and the importance of patient access to accurate information.
