- Authors
Hall, Katrina Willard
- Abstract
The article discusses the importance of reading aloud high-quality, culturally children's literature in facilitating literacy development and comprehension in young children. A study reveals that reading aloud children's books also promotes a love of books and reading and develops an understanding and preference for specific genres. On the other hand, it is emphasized that teachers' preference of read-aloud books can have an impact on the language of children as well as their vocabulary development. It can also positively affect children's verbal and written responses to books. Furthermore, the author stresses that the messages promoted by teachers should express respect and acknowledgment of diverse cultures. The guidelines for selecting culturally authentic books are also provided.
