Reframing African Art for the Future of Museums.
- Authors
Liu, Yucheng
- Abstract
The book review discusses "African Art Reframed: Reflections and Dialogues on Museum Culture" by Bennetta Jules-Rosette and J.R. Osborn. The authors address the challenges faced by museums in the 21st century, particularly in interpreting and exhibiting contemporary African art. They critique the dominance of Western classificatory systems in museums and propose a theoretical framework called nodal theory to capture the structural transitions that museums have undergone. The authors argue that museums should be seen as dialogical spaces and propose a curatorial strategy called unmixing, which allows audiences to interact with artwork digitally. The book provides a roadmap for studying and practicing museum culture, enriching curatorial toolkits, and promoting cultural diversity in museums.
