- Abstract
This article appraises the book "Barrington Moore," by D. Smith. A great radical scholar and loner-such was Peter Neal's verdict on Barrington Moore when the book "Social Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy," first appeared. Dennis Smith agrees with the verdict. Useful summary discussions are provided of Soviet Politics, Terror and Progress Soviet Union, Political Power and Social Theory, Social Origins, Reflections on the Causes of Human Misery, and Injustice, not seriatim but thematically in relation to the headings of origins and destinations, certainty and choice, freedom and necessity, politics and power, and terror and justice.
