- Title
"Poor Faun! poor Faun!" A Nietzschean reading of Empedocles on Etna.
- Authors
Jolly, Roslyn
- Abstract
The article offers criticism on the 1952 poem "Empedocles on Etna," by Matthew Arnold. The author uses philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche's 1872 text "The Birth of Tragedy" to analyze the deaths of Empedocles and Marsyas in the poem. The author suggests that Arnold uses references to Greek mythology to explore the effects of progressive civilization and its triumph over nature.
