- Title
Eye Rhyme: Visual Experience and the Poetics of Gerard Manley Hopkins.
- Authors
Hutchison, Hazel
- Abstract
The article analyzes the poetry of nineteenth century poet Gerard Manley Hopkins and his ideas on rhyme to the eye and his preoccupation with the sameness and unlikeness of sound and of meaning. Consideration is given to the use of metaphor and emphasis on the visual world that appears throughout his poems. Hopkins' scientific interest in optics, light, and color is explored. Critic Daniel Brown's ideas on the use of the word "stress" in Hopkins poetry and the research of scientist James Clerk Maxwell on stress are discussed.
