- Abstract
This article reviews the motion pictures Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, directed by Chris Columbus and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, directed by Peter Jackson, which are both film adaptations. Both films are based on books with rabid fan followings, and the first films in each of the series were highly successful. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is based on the second novel in J. K. Rowling's best-selling series of children's books about a mistreated boy who discovers that he is heir to a family of powerful wizards and consequently finds himself enrolled in Hogwarts, the famed school of witchcraft and wizardry. In the installment, the title character, played by Daniel Radcliffe, returns for his second year at Hogwarts, despite warnings that someone, or something, has it out for him. The film adaptation of the first novel, while certainly a fun romp, was received with mixed reviews. The principal complaint was about its rather episodic structure. While there was a central storyline, much of the movie was allegedly devoted to introducing characters and places, some of which seemed to have little direct bearing on the main thread. The criticism, it must be acknowledged, was just as applicable to the book on which the movie was based.
