- Authors
Golaszewski, Devon
- Abstract
The article explores the practice of nuptial counselling in French colonial Soudan, now Mali. The practice was to hire a woman outside the family to teach brides about their new social and family responsibilities, as well as to tutor them on their roles for their wedding night. Additionally, such counsellors were responsible for helping brides avoid witchcraft. Other topics include the role of women in Soudan society, marriage customs, and family relations.
