- Abstract
Zayn al-Din al-Kashiī is one of the important scholars of Islamic thought, which we call post-classical. He was a student of Fahruddin al-Rāzī (d.607/1210) and took lessons from him. There is little information about Zayn al-Din al-Kashshī's life in the sources. However, it can be said that his works were known and had a reputation among those who lived in his time and those who came after him. There is no exact information about the date of his death. According to our examination of his works, Kashshī died between 1210-1228. According to the information given by Khaled el-Rouayheb, it is possible that al-Kashshī died between these dates, in 1221-1222, during the raids and massacres suffered by the people of Nishapur and Herat by the Mongols. When we look at his existing works, we can say that al-Kashshī has a versatile scientific personality like his contemporary authors. Because he produced works in the fields of philosophy, theology, and logic. The work that brought Kashshī to prominence in Islamic thought is Ḥadāiq al-Ḥaqāiq. Another well-known work of al-Kashshī for which commentary was written is Muqaddimah. Kashshī's Ḥadāiq al-Ḥaqāiq consists of the trilogy of logic, nature, and theology. It can be said that his classification is based on Avicenna's Remarks and Admonitions. We had previously brought the logic section of al-Kashshī's Ḥadāiq al-Ḥaqāiq, which consists of logic, nature, and theology sections, into our language by translating and creating a critical text of it. During our later studies, we came across his work, which is called al-Mûjaz fi al-Mantiq. This work is in agreement with Ḥadāiq al-Ḥaqāiq and the Muqaddimah, whose commentary we have, in terms of form and content. While Kashshī built the subjects of logic on the duo of conception and assent in Ḥadāiq al-Ḥaqāiq, he did not examine conception and assent under separate headings in al-Mûjaz fi al-Mantiq but directly addressed the subjects within the scope of conception and assent. However, we added relevant headings to the critical text and translation. In al-Mūjaz fi al-Mantiq, al-Kashshī's work was concise and did not go into detail. Thus, it can be said that the author probably wrote the work on the basis of a practical need. Our work has two phases: first, the work is edited and translated into our language in the hope that new meanings will emerge for those interested. Second, the work is evaluated in terms of its classification and content. According to our research, there is only one copy of his work, and it has not had a critical edition nor been published before. In al-Mūjaz fi al-Mantik, al-Kashshī differs from other logicians in his views on the converse and contraposition of modal propositions and the conclusion of modal syllogisms. These different views of his were criticized by most of the leading authors after him. For example, Hunajī (d.646/1248) in Kashf al-Asrār, Abharī (d.663/1265) in Kashf al-Haqā'iq fi Tahrīr al-Daqā'iq, Urmawī (d.682/1283) in Maṭāli' al-Anwār, Qutbuddīn al-Rāzī (d.767 /1365) in Lawāmi' al-Asrār fi Sharh Maṭāli' al-Anwār, al-Kātibī (d.675/1277) in Sharḥ Kashf al-Asrār, Samarqandī (d.722/1322) in Qistas al-Afkār and Sharḥ Qistas al-Afkār referred to al-Kashshī by name.
