- Abstract
The article discusses the politics of publishing in France during the Second Empire. It was the period of mid-nineteenth-century and during this time authors, printers and publishers were subjected to the state censorship. They were made responsible for the content of their works and it was widely accepted. The article discusses the reactions towards these restrictions in the light of the trial of Madame Bovary, a novel by Gustave Flaubert. It also mentions the attitudes of the printers , authors and publishers towards censorship and presents the reactions of the author towards the trial.
