ANTIRACIST LEADERSHIP IN TESOL: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES.
- Authors

- Abstract
This article discusses what antiracist leadership means in TESOL and how we can decolonise TESOL as a field and as a profession. Racist beliefs and structures are pervasive in education and beyond, which raises the question: How can we be more additive and asset-based in the profession? Embracing multilingualism and plurilingual practices is critical for the field of TESOL. Drawing on some personal experiences with linguistic racism, I describe what guides me in this work as a scholar and leader. I contextualise this work in the TESOL field. I use theoretical frames of peace linguistics, linguistic racism, antiracism, conscientização and culturally relevant and sustaining leadership to conceptualise and present some principles and practices to tear down beliefs and structures of white supremacy in the various places in which leaders work. Schools and organisations cannot be equitable environments without explicit processes for leaders to critically examine and question their beliefs. In order to work to dismantle systemic racism and white supremacy and build antiracist environments, leaders in TESOL can apply what I call the eight Rs of antiracist leadership in TESOL and engage in practices that help create antiracist organisations: Reflect, recognise, recommend, respond, reimagine, restructure, resist and reaffirm.
