- Title
Phagocytosis: Phagocytes whet their appetite.
- Authors
David, Rachel
- Abstract
The article discusses the control by mitochondrial membrane potential of phagocyte's engulfment ability. It references the study "Continued clearance of apoptotic cells critically depends on the phagocyte Ucp2 protein," by D. Park and colleagues in the August 21, 2011 issue of "Nature Reviews Immunology." The authors speculated the possible involvement of uncoupling proteins (UCPs) since they perform mitochondrial membrane potential regulation without generating adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
