- Abstract
The antimicrobial prospective of neem leaf and bark extracts against gram-positive and gram negative bacteria (E. coli, Pseudomonas aruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus), which are mainly food spoilage bacteria. The antimicrobial activity of neem leaves and bark were measured by the disc diffusion method against three bacterial species viz. E.coli, Pseudomonas aruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus by aqueous and Methanolic extract. The efficacy of these extracts was tested against those bacteria through agar-diffusion method employing 50 5ØßL plant extract solution. According to the findings of the antibacterial assay, the methanol extracts of neem leaves and bark showed inhibitory activity against gram-positive and gram negative bacteria. The methanol extract had an antibacterial activity with mean zones of inhibition of 0.9 to 1.05 cm. Thus Neem leaves can prove to be very good antimicrobial agent as already discussed in Hindu vedic books.
